Ladies, it's time to negotiate that salary!

Today is #latinaequalpay day and I couldn't find a better time than now to go through some tips that I have personally used and worked (and sometimes didn't work so well) on how to negotiate that salary increase!



 

Review your current Job Description

Listen up ladies, this part is crucial! Truth is, most HR teams have no idea what requirements are needed by each department and have no clue what Assistants do (um hello, we're like the company super heroes!) but here is what they think we do.

  • Expenses

  • Meeting Coordination

  • Booking Travel

While you and I both know that those 3 requirements don't define what we ACTUALLY do, chances are that your peers have no clue! Alright, let's not point fingers! Truth is, as an Assistant we have a view on all matters of the business that the majority of employees in a company rarely see which means we have somewhat of an idea of what each team does in the organization, so let's give them the benefit of the doubt!


Update your Job Description!

Review your job description, make copies and start adding those other "miscellaneous" tasks that you actually do. Show them that you're an amazing project manager or event manager, who else do you know that can coordinate a huge event on short notice? We have the versatility that most people don't have so use this to your advantage! Remember, you're worth every penny, so make sure your message is very clear!


Write a proposal

I want you to take a look at your updated job description, think about the day-to-day tasks you do, think about all of those fires you're constantly putting out. I want you to really let that feeling sink in... Okay, so how do you feel? Empowered I hope! Now, use that motivation to showcase what you do and the impact you've made in the organization. Use this time to brag about yourself (humility will get you nowhere!), always keep in mind that if you don't truly believe you deserve that money, no one else will!


Talk to your boss!

It can seem scary but trust me, you'll kick yourself in the butt if you don't ask! what is the worst that can happen? They say no? Guess what! That actually might be a blessing in disguise. Why would you want to settle for anything less than what you are worth? Remember ladies, this is not only for us, but also for all future generations of women!
